How to prevent stormwater flooding in your area

Heavy rainfall is a major cause of concern in cities because due to lack of pervious surfaces the water does not get managed in its natural way? While storm drains are in a place to prevent waterlogging from concrete roads, paths, and buildings, they fail in case of heavy rainfall that may lead to clogging of drainage pipes. And, thus floods are commonplace in cities. Waterlogging can cause severe damage to the infrastructure and may badly impact the health of citizens. Water being an excellent solvent carries away everything falling in its path, and cause non-point source pollution. To deal with these issues, we need to recreate the urban infrastructure in such a way that the rainwater is managed in its natural way. While it is difficult to change the entire infrastructure, we can make certain additions to our residential and commercial complexes to achieve stormwater neutrality. Here we have shared a few tips in this regard.

1) Install stormwater attenuation plant

A stormwater attenuation tank helps in preventing flood by collecting the entire rainwater falling on a residential or commercial campus. Once it stops raining, the stormwater detained in this tank can be diverted into the main stormwater drainage network at a moderate rate, thereby preventing pressure on its pipes. Alternatively, this water can be reused for washing cars or gardening.

2) Implement green infrastructure practices

Green infrastructure practices, such as bioswales, permeable pavements, green roofs, and green streets make combined use of soil and green plants to restore the natural hydrological balance. Planting trees can help in preventing floods as they are excellent water absorbers and also controls the flow of rainwater. Plus, they also help in preventing soil erosion and promote surface water recharging.

Green infrastructure solutions, such as rain gardens, permeable pavements, green roofs and infiltration planters also provide recreational benefits.

With the above-mentioned techniques, you can achieve stormwater neutrality. These techniques are easy-to-implement, cost-efficient, and require lesser maintenance.
