Why Stormwater Mismanagement is a Big Problem? How to Prevent It?
While rain brings happiness and
cheers to everyone’s face, excessive rainfall is a cause of concern for urban
dwellers. When rainwater falls on the impervious city surfaces, it does not get
absorbed; rather it starts accumulating and causes waterlogging. The stagnant
water often becomes the breeding ground for mosquitoes which is a vector of
many life-threatening diseases. Plus, as water is an excellent solvent, it can
carry away dirt and pollutants lying on the concrete surfaces. When this dirty
water is drained to the nearby water bodies via stormwater drainage networks,
it disturbs the aquatic ecosystem. Plus, when consumed by human beings, it
causes several water-borne diseases, such as diarrhoea, hepatitis A, cholera,
typhoid, amoebiasis.
To prevent all these issues, it is important to manage the stormwater
properly. In this write-up, we have shared a few tips in this regard.
1) Install a stormwater attenuation plant- A stormwater attenuation tank can
collect the entire rainwater falling on a residential or commercial campus. The
water captured by this tank can be later released to the Greenfield areas or
stormwater drainage network by using a flow control device. In this way, it
helps in preventing floods. Moreover, it allows us to control the quality of water
before releasing it to the nearby stormwater drainage network. Therefore, it
helps in preventing non-point source water pollution.
2) Introduce more pervious surfaces- In
a natural setting, soil can absorb more than 50% of the rainwater. By replacing
the concrete pavements, we can ensure that more water is absorbed by the
ground. As soil is an excellent water filter and a natural absorber of water,
introducing it to your garden and streets can help in preventing water
pollution and floods.
3) Implement green infrastructure practices-
Green infrastructure practices, such as bioswales, vegetated rooftops, and
absorbent gardens make the combined use of soil and green plants. By
controlling the flow, volume, and quantity of water, they help in preventing
floods and water pollution.
Apart from following all the
above-mentioned tips, you should maintain good hygiene in your residential
campus as stormwater runoff can carry dirt, chemical, and debris to the nearest
stream, or lake. Animal litter, plastic bags, and hazardous household products
should not be disposed of in open as they can poison aquatic life and affect
drinking water sources.
