Three Inexpensive but Effective Techniques for Stormwater Management

We all love rain as it has a special soothing effect. But in cities, heavy rainfall is the major cause of flooding and non-source water pollution. Actually, in cities, there is a lack of pervious surfaces that will absorb the rainwater naturally. While storm drains help in diverting the rainwater from the source point to the nearby water bodies, they fail to prevent water logging in case of heavy rainfall. Another major problem is that improper management of stormwater is a major cause of water pollution.  In this write-up, we have discussed a few techniques for stormwater management that are effective in preventing flood and water pollution.

Stormwater attenuation system- It comprises a stormwater attenuation tank that will effectively collect the entire rainwater falling on a residential or commercial campus. As the tank can be installed underground, even in high-trafficked areas, it does not eat up any floor space.

Once water is stored in this tank, it can be diverted to the main drainage system or Greenfield areas. Alternatively, this water can be harvested and reused for irrigation, toilet flushing, and cooling towers.

Infiltration Trenches- They are small trenches excavated on ground to collect rainwater and allow it to be absorbed into the soil. This simple technique promotes the groundwater recharging process. Although this method is effective in controlling runoff, for best result, it should be used in conjunction with other methods like stormwater attenuation system. Also, it is important to maintain the infiltration trenches as they can result in groundwater contamination and clogging.

Green infrastructure practices- Instead of diverting the stormwater from source area to the nearby water bodies, GI practices focus on allowing the water to be absorbed by the soil and green plants. As both green plants and soil are excellent water filters and absorbents, they effectively manage the quality and quantity of water. The most commonly used techniques of GI practices include permeable pavements, green roofs, blue roofs, and rain gardens. Among them green roofs is the most effective technique for homes because apart from managing the quality and quantity of water, it also helps in maintaining the roof’s temperature through shading and evapotranspiration.

Conclusion- With the above-mentioned techniques, the significant issue of stormwater management can be mitigated.  For best results, these techniques should be used together. Alternatively, you can install a tank based stormwater attenuation system as it is most effective in dealing with the quality and quantity of stormwater.
