Simple, Practical and Cost-efficient Ways to Stormwater Attenuation

We all love rain. After all, it has a special soothing effect. But the onset of the rainy season can bring hundreds of problems to urban dwellers. In a natural setting, most of the rainwater is soaked by green plants and soil. However, in cities, due to the lack of impervious surfaces, heavy rainfall may cause floods. Although municipalities have installed stormwater drainage networks to divert the rainwater from the source to the nearby water bodies, it fails to prevent flood in case of heavy rainfall.

The stormwater can carry away pollutants and sediment along with it and may cause non-point source pollution. When this polluted water is consumed by human beings or animals, it may cause several infectious diseases. Also, the chemical pollutants that are carried away to rivers may cause an imbalance in the aquatic ecosystem.

To prevent these issues, it is imperative to manage stormwater runoff properly. While the local government and municipalities make a great endeavour to prevent these issues, as a citizen, we all have certain responsibilities in this regard. By maintaining stormwater neutrality in our own houses, we can prevent flood and stormwater pollution. In this write-up, we have shared a few tips to manage the flow, volume, and quality of stormwater.
  1. Install a stormwater attenuation plant- To prevent waterlogging on your residential campus, you should install a stormwater attenuation plant. It should comprise a stormwater attenuation tank that can effectively store the entire rainwater falling on the roof, lawn, and other impervious surfaces. Once, water is detained in this tank, it can be diverted to the stormwater drainage network at a moderate rate or it can be reused for cleaning and gardening.
  2. Plant trees- To control the flow of stormwater, it is important to add green plants and trees to your campus. As plants can soak stormwater runoff, it helps in preventing floods. Plus, both green plants and soil are great water filters. Therefore, they help in preventing non-point source pollution.
  3. Go permeable- The main cause of waterlogging due to stormwater runoff is the lack of permeable surfaces that can soak the rainwater easily. Instead of cemented paths, you should opt for permeable material for path, patio, or driveway.

On a final note, we suggest implementing green infrastructure practices, such as rain gardens, bioswales, and green roofs. Plus, if your area receives heavy rainfall, then install a soak pit to promote more groundwater recharging.
