Restore Natural Water Cycle with Stormwater Management Techniques

Stormwater management is a technique to prevent waterlogging and flooding by managing the flow of stormwater. In a natural setting, most of the rainwater is absorbed by the soil. And, the rest water flows towards the rivers and streams via natural waterways.

But in cities due to impermeable surfaces all around, the stormwater cannot be absorbed by the ground, which in turn prohibits the natural process of groundwater recharging. Moreover, due to lack of permeable surfaces, flooding and waterlogging is a commonplace. To avoid this, cities have storm drains that allow the flow of water from congested urban areas to nearby water bodies.

The water flowing from the concrete urban surfaces to storm drains often carries away debris, petrol, bacteria, eroded soil, and pesticides. Also, sometimes excess rainwater flowing through the storm drains can put huge pressure on the drainage pipes, leading to their bursting off.

To manage the quantity and quality of stormwater, it is best to install a stormwater attenuation system.

How does it work?

  • Modern stormwater attenuation practices hinge on the idea of detaining stormwater and diverting it to the storm drainage system at a moderate rate. Installing an underground stormwater attenuation tank is the most cost-efficient and effective technique for managing the flow of rainwater.
  • It can capture and reuse stormwater to maintain or restore natural hydrology. By detaining stormwater and removing pollutants, the quality of the water flown to the nearby water bodies can be managed. This will prevent water pollution.
  • To manage the flow of stormwater, apart from installing a stormwater attenuation system, you should implement green infrastructure practices, such as rain gardens, blue roofs, and green roofs.
  • Implementing these practices will speed up the absorption of rainfall and snowfall to soak into the soil. Also, they can protect, restore, or mimic the natural water cycle management.

Conclusion- Stormwater management practices can help in preventing waterlogging and managing the quality of rainwater flow to the rivers. By installing the underground stormwater attenuation tanks along with green infrastructure practices, the natural water cycle can be restored.
