Effective Stormwater management Approached in Cities

With rapid urbanization, cities have lost their natural green spaces. The greying of the urban landscapes has been a major cause of flooding because the natural hydrological system has been disturbed. To eliminate these issues, cities are adopting a sustainable urban drainage system that can help in restoring the natural water drainage system within the urban environment landscape.

SUDS(sustainable urban drainage system ) helps in mitigating flood impacts by temporarily storing water and filtering the pollutants at the source. But sometimes, SUDs cannot mitigate the flooding alone. Moreover, the storm drains do not filter the water before being drained to the river, streams, and Greenfield areas. To eliminate all these issues, it is important to install a stormwater attenuation system in each residential and commercial complex. Apart from that, to restore the natural hydrological system, we must implement green infrastructure practices.

What is the stormwater attenuation system?

The stormwater attenuation system is the way to manage the quality and quantity of water on a residential or commercial project. It comprises an underground stormwater attenuation tank that effectively collects the rainwater falling on a house. Once water is stored in this tank, it can be filtered before being discharged to the main drainage system. The water stored in this tank can be discharged at a moderate rate, thereby eliminating the extra pressure on storm drainage pipes.

What are green infrastructure practices?

Green infrastructure practices make use of soil and green plants to fasten the process of groundwater recharging. You might not know that soil is one of the best water filters. When stormwater falls on the soil, the chemicals and pollutants present in it are absorbed by the soil. And, these chemicals can be further used by green plants for processing their food. The plants also help in preventing soil erosion and soil pollution.

Along with green pathways, GI practices also make use of blue spaces formed of surface water bodies within the urban domain. These practices help in restoring natural ecosystems which may have been heavily modified due to urbanization.

Common GI practices include rain gardens, planter boxes, bioswales, permeable pavements, green roofs, and urban tree canopy.

Conclusion- Sustainable urban drainage system helps in preventing flooding. To manage the quantity and quality of rainwater further, it is best to install stormwater management practices and implement green infrastructure practices. These practices also help in restoring the natural hydrological system by promoting groundwater and surface water recharging.
