Know the difference between stormwater detention tanks and water retention tanks

Stormwater planning and installation of stormwater detention tanks are an important part of building a residential property. Tanks are used to collect rainwater from a certain area. And, once the water is stored, it is then diverted to the main sewage system at a controlled rate or it can be used for domestic purposes. There are two types of tanks used in rainwater management i.e., water retention tank and stormwater detention tank. Let’s find the differences between both of them.

Water Retention Tanks

Water retention tanks are used to collect water from rooftops and other hard surfaces in your house. These tanks store rainwater, which can be later used for several domestic purposes. They not only prevent flooding but also helps in rainwater harvesting. The water stored by retention tanks can be used for numerous purposes, such as irrigating your garden, washing the cars, filling up the swimming pool, and more.

Stormwater Detention Tanks

Stormwater detention tanks are generally installed in homes as well as large residential tanks. They help in preventing flood by managing the overflow of water by storing the excess water and then releasing it into the main sewage system. These tanks remain empty throughout the year except for the rainy season and winters. Stormwater detention tanks comprise a valve that slowly releases water into the sewage system at a controlled rate. Plus, they comprise a large inlet pipe to prevent sudden surges of water runoff.

Water retention tanks are used for preventing floods in areas that might get a normal rainfall or snowfall. In case of heavy rainfall, stormwater detention tanks should be used. Apart from that, you can effectively install other natural solutions to allow more surface water recharging. Because rainwater often carries small debris, the stormwater attenuation system may become ineffective due to blockage. So, it is important to install filters at the inlet point to arrest large debris.
